National Treasure Matsue Castle
Matsue Castle is one of the 12 existing castle towers in Japan and known as "Chidori Castle.” The castle was designated as the national treasure in July 2015. From the watchtower on the top floor, you can see a spectacular view of Matsue City and Lake Shinji. Jozan Park has walking paths to enjoy pine trees, bamboo groves, cherry blossoms, camellias, plum trees, etc. and is a civil place for relaxation. You can hear unknown episodes of the castle during visiting the park around with a guide. The top floor of the castle tower has railings and a wall-less watchtower to provide a spectacular view of the Matsue cityscape.

Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum
Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum is at the western end of “Shiomi Nawate” with the strongest castle town-like atmosphere in Matsue and adjacent to the former residence of Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo).
The museum was built to honor the achievements of Koizumi Yakumo, which exhibits belongings such as the autograph manuscripts, first editions, etc. of Koizumi Yakumo who introduced Matsue to the world, with the masterpiece “Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan”.
His favorite desk were custom-made due to his poor eyesight. Please feel the open mind of Yakumo who traveled the world.

Shimane Art Museum
Shimane Art Museum is built fit with the beautiful scenery of Lake Shinji and has the theme of the harmony with water.
The collection exhibition usually provides “Waterfront Exhibition Room” and “Hokusai Exhibition Room” with about 40 pieces of world-class Hokusai Collection. You may find one-of-a-kind precious masterpiece in the world and/or masterpieces exhibited only in Shimane.
Additionally, the museum collects and exhibits domestic and international photographs, wooden sculptures, and arts from Shimane, etc.
The lobby for a spectacular spot for viewing the sunset over Lake Shinji is admission-free.
Even after viewing the sunset, visitors can enjoy the exhibitions with relaxing during March to September until the closing time of 30 minutes after sunset.

Lake Shinji

Lake Shinji, the seventh largest lake in Japan, is a brackish lake mixing fresh water and sea water. The beauty of the sunset view changing from moment to moment is especially spectacular and is a symbol of Matsue as a water city. Watching the sunset along the shores of the lake from Shirakata Park to National Route 9 is the best place.

Adachi Museum of Art

The Adachi Museum of Art centering on Japanese paintings and pottery arts is famous for collection of Yokoyama Taikan and a beautiful Japanese garden.
The Japanese garden is ranked No.1 by foreign professional journals, and many domestic and foreign tourists visit the museum to enjoy the seasonal beauty of spring, summer, fall, and winter.
